Before you come
What to expect at a first class
Wear
A plain t-shirt and shorts or leggings without pockets or zippers. Bare feet on the mat; tie hair back and take off jewelry.
Arrive
Ten minutes early, so a coach can show you the floor, the lockers and where to put your things.
Train
Warm-up, one technique shown by the coach, then drills with a partner. We lend wraps and gloves for your first class.
Rounds
A short round at the end, at the lightest contact in the pair. You can sit it out; nobody asks why.
Sparring
How sparring starts
Contact is a setting, not a surprise. Each step is shown first, and anyone can stop any round.
- Weeks one to four
Drills
In your first weeks everything is a drill with a partner on pads or on the mat. Nobody is trying to hit or take you down.
- After your first month
Technical rounds
Two people work one skill at a slow pace, with a coach calling it. Gloves and a mouthguard for striking.
- By invitation
Light sparring
Free-moving rounds at the lightest contact in the pair, with gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard, and a coach watching every round.
Come and see the mat
Try a class, meet your coach and ask anything you like.
